These "paintings" are microscopic pictures obtained with cross-polarized light. They show birefringence textures that are caused by the self-organization of anisotropic nano-objects in water into so-called lyotropic liquid crystalline phases. The ordered liquid is formed due to the second law of thermodynamics. Indeed, above a threshold concentration entropy is gained through alignment. In such a way the objects are keeping more degrees of freedom than in a disordered but stuck state.
Here,
nano-filaments,
nano-platelets and self-assembled
bola-amphiphiles are the protagonists. Pictures were taken in the labs of BASF Coatings Division.
